Matthew David Lewis was born in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England, to Adrian and Lynda Lewis. He has two older brothers, Chris Lewis, a television editor, and Anthony Lewis, an actor and musician.
Matthew has been acting since he was five years old. He started off with minor parts in television programs and then tried out for the part of Neville Longbottom. He has portrayed Neville Longbottom in the first five Harry Potter films. Throughout the first 4 books, the character is portrayed as rather bumbling and disorganized. He is highly gifted at Herbology. However in book 5 Neville experiences a dramatic change in his character—he becomes determined, brave, and strong-willed in his defiance of Voldemort and his followers. He shares a dormitory at Hogwarts with Harry Potter, Ronald Weasley, Seamus Finnigan and Dean Thomas. Later in life he becomes the professor of Herbology at Hogwarts.
For his role as Neville, Matthew wears a fat suit, yellow and crooked false teeth, and two-sizes-too-big shoes and has plastic bits placed behind his ears in order to make them stick out more. This is done to give the character a more clownish look
Neville has been played by Matthew Lewis in all the Harry Potter films to date.
His favorite bands are Green Day, The Strokes, The Killers, Guns N' Roses Velvet Revolver.
His favorite football team is Leeds United.
April 2004: In the break between filming the third and fourth installments of Harry Potter (Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004) & Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005)), he appeared as the special Harry Potter guest at the Armageddon Sci-Fi and Comics Convention in Auckland, New Zealand.
After he read the first book of Harry Potter, he would dress up as Harry and run around his room. This was before he got the part of Neville. He attends St Mary's High School in Ikley, West Yorkshire.
